Performance and miles per gallon are rarely mentioned positively together in the same sentence. During the American muscle car era, depleting oil sources and $4.00 per-gallon gasoline prices were never on the minds of the automakers. Therefore the biggest, most powerful engines possible were stuffed into the heaviest body and frame structures ever seen on the road. Today is a much different story. Unstable oil prices and economic turmoil are a burden on the auto industry. With hybrid and electric powered vehicles on the distant horizon, many automakers are looking to their compact four-cylinder models to keep business afloat. Some of these compact cars are not only extremely fuel efficient, a few are downright sporty and actually fun to drive. These light chassis platforms may soon be the only options for car-driving enthusiasts to afford to own. Here is a short list of the fun and versatile cars coming out for the 2009 model year. 2009 Toyota Matrix The newest rendition of the Matrix model from Toyota is the fastest and sportiest yet. With multiple engine, transmission and drivetrain choices, the Matrix buyer is given the ability to decide which combination is best suited for him/her in everyday driving. The base model Matrix comes with a 1.8 liter engine with 132 horsepower and either a four-speed automatic or five-speed manual transmission. The base model comes in a front-wheel drive trim and gets and astounding 32 miles-per-gallon on the highway. S and XRS model variants of the Matrix both come with the bigger 2.4 liter engine with 160 horsepower. This engine also has Toyota's variable-valve-timing system to achieve fuel economy at lower revs but still provide a burst of power in the higher rev-range. The S trim comes standard with the all-wheel-drive system and the four-speed automatic tranny, while the XRS is fitted with the five-speed manual gear box and the front-wheel-drive system. The choices are complicated but give the consumer complete control on what they want to drive. This sport-hatchback offers a more aggressive model to the Toyota lineup, with great fuel economy and everyday utility. The suspension has been redesigned from the Corolla model to offer better handling and less body roll. Prices from the Matrix start at $17,000 for the base model and can climb to $22,000 for a loaded S trim all-wheel-drive variant. 2009 Honda Fit The Fit is also redesigned for 2009. Honda has upgraded the new Fit with much more aggressive styling, a newer-more powerful engine, bigger-more efficient brakes and a more refined and roomier interior. The Sport version also offers suspension upgrades and even more styling cues to the already sporty base model. The new Fit comes with a retuned 1.5 liter i-VTEC motor with 117 horsepower. It's up eight horses from last year's model but still gets 35 miles-per-gallon on the highway. Like the Matrix, the Fit's engine features variable-valve-timing technology (like most Hondas) that allows the driver to have excellent fuel economy at low revs and better performance at higher engine speeds. The body and frame of the Fit have also been redesigned to offer a more rigid and stiffened suspension ride quality when you are cornering through the twistys. For the 2009 model, two transmissions are offered: a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. The paddle shifters are Formula One inspired and offer the driver instantaneous up and down shifts at their fingertips. The base model Fit starts at $14,500 while the sport model with the optional navigation system comes is priced around $19,000. That makes the Fit affordable in any model or variation and the bargain of the year when you combine its performance and styling with its fuel efficient nature. 2009 Mini Cooper The 2009 Cooper is relatively the same-looking as the first generation that arrived in the U.S. in 2006. Besides a few design changes to the front end (headlights, hood-scoop) and a new wheel design, the first and second generation Coopers are identical. That however, is where the similarities end. The most distinct change to the Mini is all-new turbocharged power plant under the hood of the S trimmed model. The 1.7 liter four-banger is no fitted with BMW's twin-scroll turbocharger to deliver neck-snapping torque at every rpm. The old Mini had a supercharged 1.6 liter engine that lacked the top end horsepower of the new version. Power is up to 172 horses. By the way, not only in the new Cooper S the fastest on this list, but on the highway it gets the best gas mileage. It's a whopping 37 miles per gallon on the highway. The new Mini comes in two trims, base and S models. Each comes with a close-ratio six-speed manual gear box, but a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters is optional. The cheaper base model gets a 1.6 liter motor with 120 horsepower instead of the turbocharged mill. Both models get the famous Cooper go-kart style suspension, but the S model comes standard with upgraded springs, stiffer shocks, bigger vented disc brakes and a new traction control system; to give it even better handling characteristics. Pricing for the base model Cooper starts at $19,200, while the S model is $22,600, making this the most expensive compact on this list if you opt for the fully-loaded S model. It's well worth the price though, for all of the performance and handling upgrades that Mini is offering with their 2009 model. The Cooper's excellent fuel economy alone will make the new version a hot seller as gas prices continue to climb.

In Barcelona, Spain last week Honda F1 team has tested its new aerodynamic design which was in the form of "elephant ears". The Honda RA107 which was driven by Christian Klien with its protruding elephant ears on its front nose was following the heels on MacLaren's nose-straddling front wing. Unfortunately it seems like the elephant ears are not really meant for racing, the Honda F1 team has set the slowest time of the day. The team has finally decided not to push through with their new aerodynamic design since it has done nothing to enhance the performance of their car. According to Jacky Eeckelaert, engineering director, "The main purpose of our test programme this week was to evaluate different aerodynamic configurations which have been developed in order to improve the braking stability of the car. The braking is definitely better now and the lap times have improved and become more consistent, but there is still a long way to go to bring the team back into contention." Honda, second largest auto seller in Japan and maker of high quality accord body kit, has been working really hard to correct the problems of the new car since the start of the season especially in terms of the car's handling performance. According to some reports the team is currently working round the clock to develop a new car which would be launch hopefully next month in time for the Canadian Grand Prix. Although the test didn't go well for the Honda team it proceeded remarkably for some teams like for instance David Coulthard and Red Bull Racing has been able to grab some attention by posting a new track record with a time of 1:21.066. The quick lap happens during the qualifying simulation wherein the RB3 was running on a minimal amount of fuel just before it hit the circuit. Pedro de la Rosa of the McLaren's was 2-10ths back as he tries to test the new front wing of the team's car which would make its debut at the Spanish Grand Prix in two weeks time. Felipe Massa of the Ferrari team was able to finish with the third fastest time despite a mechanical failure that has interrupted his drive in the morning. And as expected of Ferraris they have finished the week recording the fastest time, three out of the four testing days. Giancarlo Fisichella, the driver for Renault was the fourth quickest with Robert Kubica completing the top five. The driver for Toyota, Ralf Schumacher finishes as the sixth fastest. The 2002 to 2005 edition of this car returned to its original hatchback roots. While the car still had the 160 horsepower engine under its hood, it did not gain as much acclaim as its predecessor due to its less than sporty look. The current Honda Civic SI now comes in two body designs, the 2-door coupe and the 4-door sedan. With a 197 horsepower 2.0-liter engine to give it the power that a lot of car buyers these days seem to want, it is no wonder that this car, which comes in numerous color choices, is one of the most popular cars being purchased these days.

Will Hydrogen Cars Replace Hybrid Cars?

Wouldn't you just know it, just as the Hybrid Car begins to make its presence felt as the saviour of tomorrows motorist (and the world) along comes another young pretender to the throne - The hydrogen fuelled car. Some people say that hydrogen cars will have pure refeshment water on tap. We shall see, in theory it could happen with a Hydrogen Car but they are way behind the Hybrid Car in their development program and forecasting is impossible. Hydrogen cars do however, have the potential to be better cars than Hybrid Cars in several ways so we need to compare their known characteristics.
Hydrogen cars use a chemical reaction rather than a burning process for motive power
Conventional cars burn fossil fuel and Hybrid Cars use smaller amounts of the same fuel to charge their batteries. Hydrogen Cars do not use fossil fuel at all. Instead Hydrogen Cars depend upon a chemical reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen that produces a lot of energy plus pure water residue - a completely pollution free process. Hence the earlier reference to water on tap in Hydrogen cars. It is not possible for Hybrid Cars to achieve the same thing without breaking the Laws of Chemistry.
The reaction process in Hydrogen Cars produces up to three times the energy output from the equivalent gasoline based process in conventional and hybrid cars.
Hydrogen fuel burns both hotter and faster than fossil based fuel and is therefore much more efficient. In theory therefore it should be possible to design Hydrogen Cars that canreach incredible speeds with as yet unrealised acceleration compared to Hybrid Cars. There is simply no way that Hybid Cars, dependent as they are (in all their forms) on battery power, will be able to compete on this level.
The question arises "Is the hydrogen car concept for real?
Many people believe that Hybrid Cars reflect reality much more than Hydrogen Cars do. Hybrid Cars exist on our roads now and have already cut pollution emmissions by some 30% to 50%. Why then do we need to indulge in a possible flight of fancy such as the Hydrogen Car by investing vast sums of money to try to achieve the impossible?
The Hydrogen used in Hydrogen Cars is defined as a fuel carrier. It is not considered to be a fuel source in itself.
Indeed, it is hoped by some proponents of this type of fuel process, that in the future it will be possible to produce hydrogen with the use of such sources as wind power and other renewable energy sources.That means that hydrogen has to be produced from other sources. And people are hoping that hydrogen will be able to be produced from things such as wind power or other types of renewable sources. Right now, it looks like all we have is natural gas. That is the most efficient way to get hydrogen. And if that's the case, then there's no need to make hydrogen cars. Hybrid cars already cut down on how much gas people use. Who needs hydrogen cars that may end up costing us more in natural gas?
It will be hard create a lot of stations to fuel hydrogen cars
People are saying there is an overwhelming amount of challenges when it comes to creating the multitudes of hydrogen fueling stations that would be needed if millions of people suddenly started owning hydrogen cars. Hybrid cars use gas. And we already have gas stations.
But president Bush has made it clear that he wants hydrogen cars to be on the roads in significant numbers by the year 2020. So it seems that those who oppose hydrogen cars might just have to hold their breath and see if hydrogen cars actually live up to the lofty promises people associate with them. If they don't live up to their promises, people will probably start running back to hybrid cars in droves. And that's not too bad. Hybrid cars or hydrogen cars, one of them is going to get us to cleaner air.

In November of 2007, Honda announced its next generation eco-friendly vehicle, the Honda FCX Clarity. Unlike many of the other eco-friendly cars such as hybrids and other hydrogen cars, the FCX Clarity hydrogen car uses what is called a fuel cell.
A fuel cell is a device that creates electricity from the fuel, in this case hydrogen. The Honda V Flow fuel cell is a revolutionary breakthrough that generates enough electricity to power a real world car. The fuel cell combines hydrogen from the fuel tank with oxygen in the air to produce two things: electricity and water.
That is correct; water is the only byproduct of the Honda FCX Clarity!
This amazing system allows the Honda FCX Clarity to be ranked as what is known as a ZEV (Zero Emissions Vehicle). It has absolutely no harmful emissions of any sort.
The wheels are driven by a quiet, compact electric motor that draws power from the fuel cell and from the lithium-ion (Lion) battery that like a gas hybrid is also charged when braking and driving downhill.
Comparative Gas Mileage
There is no direct way to compare gas mileage as hydrogen is a compressed gas and is measured in kilograms of fuel weight. The tank holds 4.1kg of fuel (about 9 pounds) which is enough to give the car a range of 280 miles. Miles per gallon is calculated using the GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent) which determines the comparative energy used to move the car.

The Honda FCX Clarity drives just like any other Honda, with on exception, it has virtually no engine noise. With its super quiet engine it has ample pick-up and produces 134 horsepower, more than enough to move its light, aerodynamic frame around the road. The vehicle also sports a lot of Honda's upcoming features and technology with a very advanced, yet comfortable and convenient interior.
Honda plans to produce a limited of the 2008 FCX Clarity models and offer them on lease at $600/month. They are available in southern California in areas near pre-existing hydrogen refueling stations. Honda has also created a Hydrogen Dealer Network where the cars are to be sold and serviced.

Coming in with some newer models is the 2008 Honda Civic. Body styles are the usual 2 door coupe and 4 door sedans. Being included in the sedan line is a gas/electric Hybrid model. In both sedans and coupes are the DX, LX, and EX models. New models in 2008 is the EX-L, Si trim and the Civic MUGEN Si sedan. Available only to New York and California markets is the Civic GX. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration front crash test rating gave five stars to both driver and passenger fronts. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave 4 star ratings (4 star being the highest) across the board in all areas it judges minus a 3 star for driver torso. The MUGEN Si has Twin-Ring Motegi track- tuned suspension with stiffer springs and firmer dampers. BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KDW High grip tires (215/40R18) surround the forged aluminum rims (18 x 7.5 inches). It comes with is a "Cat-Back" sport exhaust system. With the added aero-package you get front spoiler and sports grill, side spoilers, rear diffuser, and adjustable rear wing. Under the hood you'll find the 122 cubic inch, 197 hp, 2.0 liter, 16 valve inline 4 engine. It has an aluminum block and head with port fuel injection. Torque is 139 pounds per foot at 6200 rpm, maxing out at 8000. It'll go 0 to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds. Transmission is a 6 speed manual. Wheelbase is 106.3 inches. Brakes are ABS and vented disc/disc on the front wheel drive. There is only planned for a release of only 1,000 per year with a MSRP for this model of Civic starting in at $30,000 Standard features on the 4 door sedan or the 2 door coupe EX-L model include Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS) with airbag cutoff sensor for the passenger controlled by weight in the seat, electronic brake force distribution and in-glass radio antenna. EX-L models come with heated front seats and leather upholstery. Seats 5 passengers and is available in 12 trims. Engine specs come in at 110 cubic inch, 140 hp, 1.8 liter, 16 valve inline 4 cylinder. Torque comes in at 128 pounds per feet at 4,000 rpm. Only a 5 speed transmission here that's manual or automatic front wheel drive with navigation system and standard overdrive. Wheelbase for the EX-L is 106.3 inches. Also coming standard is the ABS. MSRP for this model $19,910. The 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid is loaded with standard features including but not limited to XM satellite radio, OPDS, and tire pressure monitor just to name a few. This gas/electric hybrid is at 110 hp combining both gas and electric requiring no plug-in charging. When you need a boost to your acceleration the electric motor will kick in automatically. It's got a 110 hp, 1.3liter, 8 valve inline 4 cylinder with a VAR speed automatic transmission. Torque for this model is only 123 pounds per foot at 2500 rpm when running on gas or electric. The 15 inch tires on the Hybrid are stopped by disc brakes in the front and drum in the rear. Comes with independent suspension all around on this front wheel drive. MSRP for this model starts in at $22,600. With the last of the newer models is the GX. The 2007 model was named greenest car of the year. This car runs on compressed natural gas. This models standard engine specs are 1.8 liter, 113 hp inline 4 cylinder with multi port fuel injection. It is accompanied with a 5 speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Torque comes in at 109 pounds per foot at 4300 rpm. This front wheel drive has disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear. 15 inch wheels are all around the car with a wheel base of 106.3 MSRP starts off at $24,590. Hondas Civic DX is the basic version. This 16 valve, 1.8 liter, 4 cylinder engine has a multi port fuel injection system pushing torque to 128 pounds per foot at 4,300 rpms. You can get the 5 speed transmission in either 5 speed automatic or manual. The DX is riding on 15 inch all season wheels with and independent suspension containing front struts and a rear double wishbone. For stopping the ABS brakes have electric brakeforce distribution among the two disk brakes that are ventilated and drum in the rear. This car is available in both coupe and sedan with a starting MSRP at $15,010. The first upgrade to the DX is the LX. It upgrades feature including cruise control, air conditioning, and a more powerful audio system as well as other features not seen on the compact class. The Lx caries the same engine as the DX. The ABS brakes are the same as well. MSRP start is at $16,960. The EX goes above and beyond in with the features over that of either the DX or Lx. It is, however, unlikely to sell automobiles at the cut-rate prices that rivals Tata Motors and Renault are promising for upcoming models.Japan's second-largest carmaker, which inaugurated its second plant in India, in the northern state of Rajasthan on Sunday, plans to roll out its first small car from the plant in 2009.Tata Motors plans to sell a car priced at 100,000 rupees ($2,459.95) from next year that would make it India's most low-cost automobile.Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said earlier this year that his company also plans to manufacture a $3,000 car for the Indian market.However, Satoshi Aoki, Honda's Chairman, told reporters at the plant in Tapukara that building a car that is cheap would be difficult for Honda. He said their mini car in Japan costs nearly $9,000 and to produce something at one-third the cost will be rather challenging. At present, Honda controls 5.5 percent of the Indian market.On its latest plant, the company is spending $491 million. It will have a yearly capacity of 200,000 units. Furthermore, Honda is expanding capacity at its plant in New Delhi and plans to produce 150,000 vehicles yearly by the end of 2010. Officials said that Honda's Indian small cars will contain 90 percent local parts.Aoki said that the North American business is very important to them, but they like to add business from other markets like China, India, Southeast Asia and Brazil, so that they would not be dependent on a single market only.Predicted to double to 2 million units by 2010 are the passenger vehicle sales in India, where 8 out of every 1,000 people own an automobile. Since the introduction of the Honda City in the market it has been very successful in keeping its competition with the likes of Ford, GM, Hyundai at bay attributed to the Civic's solid brand value which has made others at the trail playing catch up.Suzuki would like to try to topple down Honda's City with its new Maruti SX4. How good is Maruti? Does it have what it takes to compete with Honda City?Let's face it not everyone are attracted to the Honda City with its protruding Honda antenna and compared to the Maruti SX4, appearance wise it looks like Angelina Jolie while the City looks more like Dr. Spock but of course Suzuki will not agree with such comparison especially since the ad campaign tagline for the Maruti is "Men are Back". But in fairness to the Maruti, it is sporty and sexy plus it has successfully hidden its hatchback roots.The SX4 has a nice flat integrated dashboard and sporty touches of chrome everywhere, which adds up to its good looks unfortunately it failed to surpass the hand feel and rich textures found on the City's interiors. But to make up for what it lacks, the SX4 has leather seats, steering remote control airbags, and pockets for bottle holders on all four-doors.In terms of exterior, it is quite obvious that the SX4 is longer, taller, and bigger. But you know Honda it won't just sit around and wait for competition to stomp over it, the engineers at Honda has made sure that the size of the Civic will not become a disadvantage. Honda's engineers have developed a backseat that can comfortably seat three people despite its being narrower than the SX4.The SX4 despite its larger size has some drawbacks like for instance the armrest in the back of protrudes into the third person's spine just imagine if sudden brakes are applied that would definitely hurt. And that's not all the tunnel in the flooring of the SX4 does not provide much legroom. It boot also loses out marginally. On the other hand the Civic despite its small size manages to pack in a lot of space with more headroom, legroom not to mention more space for the driver.In terms of driving performance the City can provide you with the regular 77 bhp or V-Tec powerplant with 100 bhp, which is very much closer to the SX4. The Maruti SX4 is powered by a new M-16 engine, which has one twin overhead cams, a driveby-wire throttle and revs up a healthy 102 bhp compared to Cuty's 77 bhp. The Maruti has also an extra 2 kgm of torque which obviously makes it much faster on the road.When it comes to accelerating from 0 to 100, the SX4 is the winner but in terms of gear now that is another story. This is because the SX4 seems to lose steam at around 5,000 rpm while the torque curve on the City is by far crispier and linear making it perfectly suitable for city driving. The Honda City has also a more refined engine.But of course the comparison doesn't end just yet both the City's and SX4's gearbox are good although the SX4 would require for a much firmer hand. On the hand the City as expected is light and easy. Over bumps and undulations the SX4's steering gets jumpy while the Honda City's steering although light to handle feels unsettling at high speeds.Driving through traffic, the SX4 and the City both scored well however the SX4 leads in terms of ground clearance where the City suffers caused by its low ground clearance. The SX4 with its 16-inch rims and 205 tires provide better grip but so does the City with its ABS. The City wins when it comes to fuel efficiency but in terms of styling and price the SX4 wins it by landslide. Now that we know the advantages of both cars it would be easier to choose which one to buy.

(HSCI) â€" a joint venture between the Honda Motor Company Ltd., Japan and Siel Ltd., a Siddharth Shriram Group company is weighing the option of locally manufacturing the CR-V. The Honda CR-V is currently directly imported from Japan as a completely built unit and sold in the Indian market.According to Masahiro Takedagawa, president and CEO of HSCI, â€œWe are studying the possibilities of producing the CR-V locally, which will help up become a far more active player in the growing SUV market.â€At present, the Japanese auto maker is retailing an average of about 300 units of the CR-V every month. And, the vehicle has a landed price of around Rs 20 lakh, of which nearly half is accounted to import duty component.By the time Honda decided to manufacturer the CR-V in India, the target price for the vehicle will swoop down to Rs 12-14 lakh. That would mean better attraction from the customers.By fact, the CR-V is the leading player in the top-end SUV segment which include the Ford Endeavour, Mitsubishi Pajero, Suzuki Vitara and a host of other models. Most of the models are actually imported directly â€" an advantage that Honda is weighing.Another point would be the translation into more numbers in local production. HSCI believes that there is potential to increase market share, most especially if the vehicle was able to build a solid brand image for itself in the specific market.Takedagawa said that the company is extremely bullish on its prospects in the overall automobile market. Japan's second-largest automaker and producer of Acura CL body parts, Honda, is hoping for its global sales to increase by 6 percent this year to 3.76 million vehicles as demand in US, Asia, and Europe grows, according to Honda's President Takeo Fukui last Wednesday.The company has also stated that it plans to invest in research for hybrids and on other new technologies in Japan. Mr. Fukui also stated "The competition in hybrids has just begun", specifically referring to Toyota which is currently dominating the hybrid market with its top-selling Prius.Mr. Fukui said the Honda will present a new hybrid model that operates on both gas and electricity offered at an affordable cost by 2009. With this new model the company is targeting to sell around 200,000 vehicles a year. The automaker will try to focus more on its hybrid offerings and in the process increase its overall hybrid sales to around 10 percent by 2010.Honda is also expecting for sales to keep on growing in other parts of the world by 2008 and that includes North America, Europe, China, and Japan where sales dropped by 12 percent this year to 620,000 vehicles. The automaker has prepared four new models for Japan to entice buyers, according to Mr. Fukui in an interview with reporters at Tokyo hotel.The manufacturer of Accord sedan and Civic compact did not provide the overall global sales forecast for 2008 but Mr. Fukui has projected that the North American sales will increase by 3 percent to 1.59 million next year adding it to the expected 3 percent growth this year to 1.55 million vehicles.The sales projection of Honda for this year is up from the 3.55 million vehicles last 2006. And just like its archrival Toyota, Honda has also obtain sales boost from the recent increase in oil prices add to that the company's high reputation for good mileage.Mr. Fukui also announced that the company will spend around $425 million for the construction of a new research center in Japan designed for the development of next-generation cars including fuel cells and hybrids.The new research center is scheduled to start operation by 2009 but only partially. The official opening of the research center will be on 2010.Mr. Fukui said that the hybrid system developed by Honda is by far better than that of Toyota's in the sense that it cost less thereby allowing the automaker to sell its planned hybrid at a more competitive price --- and to just how much it will cost? Well Mr. Fukui declined to give any information.At present there is a great demand for Accord in the US while the Fit subcompact is a hit in Japan. In Europe where Japanese automakers are relatively new in the market, Honda is posting really good results as a matter of fact for this year the company has projected a 23 percent increase to 380 vehicles and sees an 11 percent sales growth next year to 420,000 units.The expansions being implemented by Honda in Brazil and Argentina has also help boost sales in South America. Similarly sales in China are also projected to increase by 29 percent to 420,000 units sold this year.
